The Sahelian Eco-Farm (SEF) is an integrated agriculture production system that provides simultaneous solutions to the main constraints of Africa’s rain-fed agriculture. These are: soil erosion, low soil fertility, low water use efficiency, droughts, insufficient supply of animal feed, low income, and inefficient distribution of the labor force. The chapter assesses key biophysical and economic factors of climate change impact chain in the agriculture sector of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), mainly within the decade following the launching of the Comprehensive Africa Agricultural Development Programme (CAADP) and Maputo Accord. Surface water is the main source of the water for irrigation systems on the continent level (78 percent). Only Algeria, Eritrea, Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, and Tunisia (four countries with a dry climate in the Northern and Sudano-Sahelian Regions) feed their irrigation systems mainly with groundwater. Light textured sandy soils are ubiquitous throughout the tropics and constitute an important soil resource on which millions are dependent for their livelihoods. Spanning a range of rainfall regimes from the arid to the humid tropics, they present unique sustainability and environmental challenges to resource managers.
